|You won't find it on Facebook or either council's websites, but there are now [https://www.claygate.org.uk/index.php/Notice_of_Vacancy_of_Parish_Councillors_for_the_Claygate_Parish two parish councillor vacancies]. We, the residents, have a choice: either to request an election, or to let the parish council make its own choice, a process called ''co-option''. 

Because the Parish Council exists, Claygate residents pay more council tax than anyone else in Elmbridge. Yet we get almost zero opportunity in the four-year period between elections to vote on what the Parish Council does. This is one of those rare opportunities. The Parish Council has still not specified (in its 'Standing Orders') how it makes a co-option decision, so we are in the same boat as last year which resulted in ten residents requesting that instead there be an election. Given the Parish Council's recent history of holding secret unminuted meetings&mdash;and claiming expenses for refreshments at those gatherings&mdash; and given also the behaviour of the ''Connecting Claygate'' faction in ensuring the allocation of all council posts to their people, this publication reluctantly believes it has no alternative but to recommend an election.
